Event Summary:

It was a clear moonlit night. Perfect conditions for the Spook O, which brought out lots of participants young and old to enjoy a bit of Hallowe'en and the chance to orienteer at night. Big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with set-up, registration, control pick-up and tear down. Results are now posted.

Linda Hildebrandt (Course Planner) and Marie Burgess (Event Director and the mysterious 'roving control 13') Happy Hallowe'en

Our annual favourite event is back! Come join us for a Hallowe'en themed night orienteering event at Uplands Park.

This year's annual terrifying Halloween Spook-O event will follow the Score-O format. Controls can be collected in any order - collect as many as you dare within a set time limit of 60 minutes. This year, once again it will take place in the formidable forests of Uplands Park after dusk.

New - be prepared for the potential of a 'roving ghost control'

If you are brave enough to participate, we have prepared two courses:

  • Score O Course - approx 2.5 km - 3km through the haunted forests of Uplands Park. Suited for those who have run an orienteering event before and lived to tell about it. The distance noted is the distance between controls measured as the crow flies; expect to travel much further, or for all eternity. Scare Level between 5-10. Expect to jump out of your skin at least once. :) Two categories:
    • Easy (max 19 Controls) - suitable for families and older juniors (12+), less experienced adult orienteers - walking gingerly
    • Advanced (max 24 Controls) - suitable for experienced orienteers looking for something more competitive - running fast
  • Mini Monster (Kids Course) - a 500 metre (1/2 km) short course. For those new to orienteering and furthest from the grave, this course features controls located safely on trails in lit areas or on prominent features. Access and navigation will be straight forward using the map. Chances of survival are moderate to high. Scare level 1-3. Slightly spooky stuff like spiders, and ghosty things. Fright easily eased later by chocolate intake.

Cost: :
$5 for Junior participants, $15 for Adults. Adults accompanying youngsters on the junior course can pay the junior fee. This event will include SportIdent (SI) Timing. If you wish to team up, teams may share 1 map and one SI stick. We don't blame you if you want to have company on this spooky trip through the haunted lands of Uplands.

What to Bring:
Warm clothes suitable for running for your life through the dark. A compass - highly recommended. A sturdy headlamp or flashlight <--- Very important - It may be responsible for keeping you alive.
