EVENT SUMMARY -

Thank you to all who attended our event on Wednesday. We had well over 50 participants take part on both of our courses, including some very enthusiastic scouts. Results are now available. Regular results will show all finish times and placements. Congratulations to Taiyo, Jason and Jeffrey for some fast times on the Determinator Course. On the short course, Holly & Dylan took top spot with Oscar and Sophie finishing second and third respectively. The Split Results will show how long each competitor took on an individual leg between controls. A great way to cross-compare and analyze your race. For the Determinator control skip options, control 5 proved to be a popular choice with control 6 also being a good choice given the amount of contours that a runner had to travel up and down. There were other choices of skips, so it is nice to see the variety in strategy. We hope to see all the Determinators back for another head-head match next week!

A special thank you to Angus and Scott for helping collect control flags. You earned your volunteer discount for next time.

NEXT DETERMINATOR: will take place on Wed 21 May. See Determinator #2: Juan de Fuca for details. Handicaps from the UVIC event will be applied to the results to even out the field. Expect some interesting results!

IMPORTANT: Please register early to be courteous to our volunteer organizers. Late Registrations can no longer be accepted as they create an extra admin burden at the registration table and make it difficult for organizers to ensure sufficient maps are printed. Please do come out to enjoy our fun Determinator Series, but respect the registration deadline of 1 pm on Wed 21 May for our next event. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Welcome to the return of the Determinator Series!

The Determinator is a series of 5 orienteering races taking place over 5 weeks on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. Each race is a short sprint style course where you have to collect controls in order as fast as possible. We will be using the GOAT Format which means everyone can start at the same time, and following is allowed if you can keep up with the fastest runners. Strategically, you are allowed to skip any one control of your choosing. Prefer not to be in middle of the exciting scramble at the start? Individual starts are still allowed within 10 minutes either before or after the 7 pm mass start.

When: Wednesday May 14th 2024 - Maps distributed at 645pm. Mass start at 7pm.

Where: UVIC Campus, Parking will be in Lot 2, near the McKinnon Building and Centre for Athletics. From McKenzie Avenue turn onto Gabriola Road. Follow the signs to registration/start near the McKinnon Building. See map below.

Parking: Public parking is available in Lot 2. Costs are $5 for the evening. Some street parking options off the University campus, but will require some walking to get to the start.

Courses: There will be two courses offered:

  • Determinator Course - 3.4 km intended for those with some experience - Classic Goat Format - Skip any one control of your choosing!
  • Novice - Easy Course - 2.6 km intended for those brand new to orienteering.

Cost: $15 for adults, $5 for juniors (under 13)

What to Bring: Wear light clothes suitable for running. Any decent running shoes or trail runners. No leg covering needed for this event. Compass is optional for urban terrain, but will be needed for events in forest areas.

Registration Details: Register prior to the event with our Zone4 registration system. Registration here: https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=38799 REGISTRATION CLOSES AT NOON 14 MAY 2025. Please register early enough to avoid disappointment.

IMPORTANT: Each upcoming Determinator will rank participants based on their performance at the previous events using a handicap system. Results and handicaps will be posted after the first event. This system gives a chance for everyone to compete against each other no matter their experience or speed as the handicap system creates a great equalizer.

See you out there!
