Determinator #2: Juan de Fuca

RESULTS

Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy this evening race series! We had over 30 participants. Overall results are now available. The handicaps from the previous race have been applied to adjust the times to help even out the field. Congratulations to Joel Cote for coming out on top for Determinator 2! The three fasted unadjusted race times have been shown in bold. If this was your first event, your handicap will be applied next week.

We also have lots of juniors taking part on the Short Course. Congratulations to Akos Krasznai for coming in first on the Short Course. We hope to see all the juniors come back to compete next week.

Note: Lots of variation in the best control to skip. However, after much discussion it was likely 13 or 14 that may have made the best choices. It pays to read the whole map carefully to discover where those fences are!!

Determinator 2 Overall Results

Here are the split results. These can help you compare your effort against others based on each leg of the course. Note - These reveal that some competitors may have skipped more than one control and may affect the first set of overall results. Brett and Scott ran the Determinator course late, when unfortunately the three first controls had already been collected otherwise their times would have been quite competitive. Questions can be directed to the email listed below.

The Determinator is a series of 5 orienteering races taking place over 5 weeks on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. Each race is a short sprint style course where you have to collect controls in order as fast as possible. We will be using the GOAT Format which means everyone can start at the same time, and following is allowed if you can keep up with the fastest runners. Strategically, you are allowed to skip any one control of your choosing. Prefer not to be in middle of the exciting scramble at the start? Individual starts are still allowed within 10 minutes either before or after the 7 pm mass start.

When: Wednesday May 21th 2025 - Maps distributed at 645pm. Mass start at 7pm.

Where: Juan de Fuca Recreation: JDF Rotary Picnic Shelter (or adjacent if in use)

Parking: Plenty of parking along adjacent to soccer field and baseball diamonds

Courses: There will be two courses offered:

  • Determinator Course - 3.0 km intended for those with some experience - Classic Goat Format - Skip any one control of your choosing!
  • Novice - Easy Course - 1.6 km intended for those brand new to orienteering.

Cost: $15 for adults, $5 for juniors (under 13)

What to Bring: Wear light clothes suitable for running. Any decent running shoes or trail runners. No leg covering needed for this event. Compass is optional for urban terrain, but will be needed for events in forest areas.

Registration Details: Register prior to the event with our Zone4 registration system. REGISTER HERE: https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=38877 Please register early, so organizers have an opportunity to print the right number of maps and set you up in the event software. Registration will close at 1 pm Wed 21 May. Please note: There will be NO LATE REGISTRATIONS ALLOWED after this time. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

IMPORTANT: Each upcoming Determinator will rank participants based on their performance at the previous events using a handicap system. Results and handicaps will be posted after the first event. This system gives a chance for everyone to compete against each other no matter their experience or speed as the handicap system creates a great equalizer.

It is not too late to join us for this exciting 5 week series, and get your handicap to set you up for the Final Determinator!

See you out there!
