RESULTS

Another great turn-out for our Virtual Event at Royal Roads. This was our first official Virtual Scatter O (collect all controls - no time limit) and it was interesting to see the varied route choices. Results have now been tabulated to show final results. Congratulations to David Cusack for a fast time and placing first on the Scatter O Easy Course and also another great run by Eric Kemp, who placed first on the Scatter O Advanced Course.

Results have been tabulated based on those who officially finished the Scatter O courses by collecting all controls. Those who were just trying things out or had missed a control are not included in the tabulated results displayed on this page. However, full results as well as links to see the routes chosen by others can be found here:

Scatter O - Easy

Scatter O - Advanced

Click 'Track' on any of the results and it will transport you to the RouteGadget page. When you are in RouteGadget, you can select names listed on the right, and compare route choices. Have fun comparing routes!

Note: All participants were matched against our club membership list and confirmation list for this event. Participants who used nicknames in their MapRunF results may not have their results reflected here. Please be advised to please use your full name if you wish to be recognized in the official results tally. If you notice any errors or omissions, please email Linda at hildi@shaw.ca.

Thanks for all the interest in this event! We hope you will continue to enjoy our Virtual Event series with two more events available for the month of May. See you on the trails!

This virtual event will take place on the Royal Roads University Campus and surrounding forest area. This event will follow the public health protocols as provided by BC public health and will be offered as a virtual event that can be completed independently at your leisure within the month of April. Pick a day with lots of sunshine (for good GPS coverage) and get active!

Enjoy a great walk/run through the forest trails and then stop by the castle grounds later to soak in the fabulous views. The Hatley Park Botanical Garden is also open for visitors and is currently free!

Date: Run anytime between 1 April to 30 April.

Location: Start/Finish is at the Cedar building (near the Rec Center) on the Royal Roads Campus. Upon coming in to the campus front gate, take the first road to the right (W Campus Road) and follow it down to College Drive. At the intersection of W Campus Road and College Drive, you can turn right for the Cedar building or left to the Recreation Centre to pay for parking. See map below.

Format: The format for this event is a new format called Scatter-O! Scatter O is similar to Score O in that you can find the controls in any order, but there is no time limit instead you must be sure to find all of the controls. No skipping! The orienteer who finds all of the controls in any order in the fastest time is the winner! This type of event emphasizes good planning and route choice. With no fixed time limit, you can go as fast or slow as you like. Two course options are available:

Scatter-O Easy - 14 Controls to find. Controls are mostly on or near trails or prominent landmarks with easy navigation. Great for families, beginners and those looking to walk rather than run. Approx 5 km. Allow around 90 minutes if walking.

Scatter-O Advanced - 19 Controls to find. Includes some controls from Easy Scatter-O plus some more long distance or more challenging controls including more refined navigation. Great workout for those looking to challenge themselves and/or go for a good run. Approx 6.5 km.

Map: Royal Roads map ISOM standard 1:7500

Cost: Free for registered club members.

Parking: Parking is available near the start along College Drive and cost $1.00 per hour. You can buy a ticket by the Rec Centre ticket dispenser and park close to the Start/Finish at the Cedar building. Free parking is available on residential roads to the northwest with a 10-15 minute walk to the start.

Registration: Register here via Zone 4. Your completed registration will provide a link to the map and an event access code for MapRunF.

Virtual Events - How it works:

This event will make use of the "MapRunF" app for iPhone or Android, which must be downloaded on to your phone. MapRunF will display the map for you, and uses GPS to detect your location and virtually punch the controls with an loud audible beep. There will be no physical control flags used.

To learn more about MapRunF and how VICO uses it, please check here: Virtual Orienteering using GPS

Some helpful Tips for this Event:

1 - the MapRunF will display an orienteering map, but it is highly recommended you print and use the paper map provided to you. Once you register you will get a link to this pdf map. The MapRunF map is not as up-to-date and there are some locations that may be slightly off due to the need to georeference them correctly via Google Earth. Your paper map is the most-up-to-date and will also display areas that are impacted by any recent construction projects.

2 - before going to the event, ensure your phone battery is fully charged, and that you have your volume turned up to hear the audible beep when you reach a control. It is also a good idea to silence other distractions - email, text etc. You want to enjoy your orienteering event!

3 - The Start is located in the parking area by the Cedar Building. You must travel through the Start triangle to start the MapRunF app. For the Finish, you must run through this exact same location. Be careful not to run through the Finish while you are still finding controls, this could accidentally end your run before you may like it to.

4 - When approaching the control, slow down to give your phone the best chance to get a good GPS signal. A green bar at the bottom of the MapRunF app will tell you your GPS accuracy. If this bar turns yellow or red, you have temporarily lost a good GPS lock. Just relax and stay at the control. Maybe travel in a circle. Don't worry you won't look silly. It should re-connect shortly. All points have been carefully georeferenced, if you are in the right spot you will hear an audible tone.

Please send us feedback about your experience at marieburgess101@gmail.com. Please remember to practice social distancing at all times while at Royal Roads.

Results:

You can receive automatic results from MapRunF as soon as you finish your event. A complete set of results will be displayed here following the last day this course is available on 30 April 21.
