Event Description: This event will have three course options:
Spook-O C-1- this is a short course consisting of about 5-6 easy controls suitable for little orienteers and their parents. There will be a few scary things to enjoy a bit of Hallowe'en spirit. Great for beginner orienteers and family groups looking for a bit of spooky fun. You can expect a sprinkling of unexpected tricks, spooks, scary things and treats on your journey as you orienteer your way through the dark stretches of the park.
Spook-O C-2- this course is a longer point-to-point course (collect all controls in order). This course is ideal for those with more experience orienteering in the dark, but who are hardy enough to endure a truly scary adventure in the spirit of Hallowe'en. Controls will be slightly more difficult. As with Spook-O C-1, there will be tricks, spooks, scary things, but more suited for those older 'youngsters' amongst us.
NightHawk C-3 - this course consists of a more advanced point-to-point course for experienced orienteers who love the thrill of navigating in the dark. This course will be longer with some more difficult controls. However, be aware, some controls are shared with the Spook-O and prepare yourself for the occasional spook or scary thing to jump out at you. However, you might be able to pick up some treats as well.
New this year: We have added a 'shambling moving scary thing' carrying a control flag. If you encounter this 'mobile' control, you can collect a 5 minute time bonus. Note: Volunteer needed to be 'shambling moving scary thing', please contact Marie at phone number below.
Organisers: Meet Director / Course Planner: Linda Hildebrandt and Marie Burgess. For further info, please phone 250-727-1729
Fees: Annual membership: $5 (if not already a VicO member) First event? Membership is free!
Event fee: $8 per adult. $5 for youths. Children, accompanied by an adult, are free. See club info for more detail on fees.
Bring: Flashlight/headlamp (A MUST), whistle and compass (or rent from us), and clothes suitable for the weather. Please dress warmly. If it has been raining, trails may be muddy. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
Cautions: Ground is uneven, and trails may have rocks that jump out at you unexpectedly. Running is not recommended unless you are extremely sure-footed. Walking is better unless of course you feel a vampire or some 'strange shambling moving scary thing' sneaking up on you.
Note: If it is pouring down rain, you can expect that unfortunately this event will be cancelled. If in doubt, call 250-727-1729 to confirm.
