Determinator #2 - Highrock Park, Esquimalt
May 20th 2026 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Organizer: Larry Gagnon (Event Director)
Map: Highrock Park
RESULTS
Eight runners completed the course without missing any controls on the LineO section. Others who missed LineO controls (you'll know who you are) were assessed a 2min penalty per control, so there will be a different time from that on your finish sheet. In all cases there will be strange split times around the controls you skipped - deliberately or otherwise.

Welcome to the second race of the 2026 Determinator Series!
The Determinator is a series of 5 orienteering races taking place over 5 weeks on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. Each race is a short sprint style course where you have to collect controls in order as fast as possible.
You can join in at any time in the first four sessions and still participate in the Final!
We will be using the GOAT Format which means everyone can start at the same time, and following is allowed if you can keep up with the fastest runners. Strategically, you are allowed to skip any one control of your choosing. Prefer not to be in middle of the exciting scramble at the start? Individual starts are still allowed within 10 minutes either before or after the 7 pm mass start.
When: Wednesday May 20, 2026 - Maps distributed at 6:45pm. Mass start at 7pm.
Where: High Rock Park, Esquimalt.
Parking: Some parking along Cairn Rd, Old Esquimalt Rd, or Matheson Ave. (see map below)
Map: HighRock Park, 1:2000, updated May 2026.
Courses: There will be two courses offered:
- Determinator Course - intended for those with some experience. Because this event is run on a smaller park there will be a map exchange after the Classic Goat style event and the second map will be a Line O format. The Line O event requires that the competitor navigate along a marked course line drawn on the map. No controls are marked but there are controls along the line which you must punch to prove your line navigation.
- Novice - Easy Course -1km intended for those brand new to orienteering.
Cost: $15 for adults, $5 for juniors (under 13)
What to Bring: Wear light clothes suitable for running. Any decent running shoes or trail runners. No leg covering needed for this event. Compass is optional for this urban park terrain, but is recommended.
Registration: Register online using the following: https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=41972
IMPORTANT: Each upcoming Determinator will rank participants based on their performance at the previous events using a handicap system. Results and handicaps will be posted after the first event. This system gives a chance for everyone to compete against each other no matter their experience or speed as the handicap system creates a great equalizer.
See you out there!
