WELCOME TO THE SUMMER WEDNESDAY EVENING TRAINING (WET) SERIES!

Are you ready to take your next step in your orienteering? Been with the club for a while? Eager to add to your skills?

This first Wednesday evening session (offered by zoom) is meant to kick off our popular WET series that the club has hosted over the last few years. This series takes place every Wednesday evening for a period of about 10 weeks over the summer months and is open to experienced and active club members, who have been attending events regularly.

Weekly training events will take place in a variety of locations throughout the Victoria area and will include a mix of practical training exercises along with some fun orienteering events. Sorry - No newcomers or beginners please.

In this first session, we will use a series of maps and exercises to introduce advanced orienteering techniques to include:

  • route choice
  • strategies for off-trail controls:
    • use of attack points
    • contouring
    • aiming-off
  • using a systematic approach (C-A-R-T) to speed through controls
  • error recovery

All of this theory, will be followed up by a practical session so you can try-out what you learned in subsequent WET sessions. Details to be provided at the end of the zoom session.

The success of our WET series is dependent on participants taking a role in helping to organize at least one of the WET series under the guidance of a more senior club member. No worries if this is new, we will prepare you with the skills and equipment needed. Our WET series offers an opportunity for first-time organizers to also try course planning in a low stress environment. So in addition, to the introduction of the topics above, we will also introduce the following:

  • organizing an orienteering event
  • course planning
  • course planning tools & equipment

Interested?

Let us know by emailing victoria.orienteering@shaw.ca to be put on our mailing list. Please include how long you have been with the club, your goals for learning and if you have participated in a previous WET series in the last few years. You will receive an email with instructions on how to join our first kick-off zoom session and subsequent info on where to meet for our weekly WET sessions.

The best part! Participation in the WET series is Free! However, in exchange for no cost, we do need your help to make the series a success by asking everyone to take one small part in organizing at least one of the training events and activities.

Previously participated in the WET series? We hope you will be able to take the lead in organizing one of the weekly events. A senior club member will still be there to provide guidance, resources and equipment.

First time trying out the WET series? Don't worry - we will not throw you into the deep end. Just come out, improve your orienteering, have fun hanging out with all the other keen club members and sign up as a helper for just one of the events so that you can also contribute to making this series a success.

Social! - whenever possible, we would like to add in a social component after our WETs. So expect an invitation or two to meet up in a pub afterwards where, of course, we get to look at maps and talk about orienteering!

We look forward to an awesome summer of orienteering!
