ORIENTEERING SKILLS - ADVANCED

Have you been attending club events for a while and looking to improve your skills? Maybe you want to learn how to apply some more effective techniques to find those more difficult off-trail controls? Perhaps you are interested in attending the upcoming BC Orienteering Championships to bring your orienteering up to the next level. Then this advanced skills clinic is for you.
This course is suited for those who want to get faster and take on more challenging courses. This 2 1/2 hour session will include how to:
- use the compass to follow a bearing and nail those off-trail controls
- keep track of distance (Pacing)
- apply advanced Orienteering Techniques (Attack Points, Aiming-off, using Catching Features, etc)
- choose the best route, and
- how to recover more quickly if you have made an error.
Format:
This session will be offered via an Outdoor Session (Practical) - to be conducted at West Thetis Lake Park where you will get to practice compass bearings, pacing and engage in a number of exercises designed to let you practice specific advanced skills. This session will conclude with a short advanced orienteering course to test out what you have learned.

IMPORTANT: This Advanced Skills session is open to active club members and designed for adult participants or mature juniors (age 14 and up). In particular those club members who wish to attend the BC Orienteering Championships. No new members please. To ensure an effective instructor/student ratio, there is a limit in the number of participants that can take part in this session. Preference will be given to those who are interested in participating in the upcoming BCOCs hosted by the Victoria Orienteering Club.
Cost: $20 per person.
