2015 Determinator #3 – May 13
MEET REPORT
Another great evening other than the wind that seemed focused on our poor registration helpers. This weeks Determinator winner was Jesse Campbell who had a fast time (19.29) and a 1.73 handicap. Fastest time of the evening was 17.24 posted by John Downey who kept his skip until the end. Close behind and separated by less than a minute were Toby Gardner, Jade Carter, and Roger Macleod. Controls skipped was varied with 17, 5, 12, and 8 all running about equal. Linda and Jade ran the full course and didn't skip any- probably because they were having so much fun. Sara and Sam posted a winning time on Course 1 and brought relatives from Germany to show them how it's done in Canada.
Full results showing adjusted times and latest handicaps are available on the link below. Split times are unfortunately not available.
Determinator 3 Results and New Handicap
Many thanks to Patricia and David for their help at registration and to Leigh and Gill for handling all the S.I. and results. Thanks also to John Downey and Linda Hildebrandt for control pick-up.

The ever popular 5-week Determinator Series is back for 2015!

2015 Determinator #3 – May 13
This event will take place at the Westshore Parks and Recreation Centre and adjoining sportsfields. As always, beginners are welcome. Please arrive early, identify yourself at registration and we will organize a quick beginner clinic for you. Please note: Posted signage in the park indicates that no dogs are allowed.
Registration Location: Registration and Start/Finish will be located at the outdoor shelter located at the very northeast side of the soccer fields. To get there, head to the West Shore Recreation Centre on the Island Highway in Colwood. Drive down the hill behind the rec centre past the Q-Centre (Formerly Bear Mountain Arena). Keep following the roadway down to the parking lots on the east side of the soccer fields and north of the baseball fields. Drive to the very end and look for signs directing you in.
Registration Time: Registration will be open from 6:00 to 6:45. Please try to be on time!
Starts: Determinator mass start 7:00pm. Individual starts for Determinator and Short course 6:30 to 7:00. Course closure 8:00 – we need to pick up controls before dark
Courses: The courses will be in relatively easy terrain, with a mix of forest, meadow and urban landscape. There are two options:
- Short – under 2 km. Visit all controls and in sequence
- Determinator – about 2.5 km. Visit controls in sequence but one control can be skipped. The challenge here is deciding which one to skip while trying to keep up with (or get ahead of) the pack
Awards and Handicaps: There will be a token award for the winner (adjusted for handicap) of the Determinator each week. For your first event of the year you will have a handicap of 1. Your future handicaps will be based on your time compared with the winner’s.
Bring: a compass and whistle (mandatory). Wear clothing that is suitable for running.
SI: This event will be using Sport-Ident punching. Bring your stick or $2 to rent one
Cost: $8 per map. Membership required. (Membership is free for first-time participants)
Preregistration: To give us an idea of how many maps to print, we’d appreciate it if you could either register for the event on our web site or contact leighb1@telus.net. Pre-registration isn’t mandatory – it’s just helpful to us if you do let us know in advance. We’ll have spare maps for “drop-ins”, but if short on maps preference will be given to those who pre-registered.
