Uvic B-Event and Cadet Orienteering Championships
April 19th 2014 1:00pm
Organizers: Linda Hildebrandt (Course Planner), Scott Sheldrake (Assistant), Marie Burgess (Event Director)
Event Report
This Saturday's event was a big success. Over 80 participants young and old enjoyed a fine day of orienteering on the UVIC Campus and surrounding area. The Cadet Championships were well attended by almost 40 cadets from six cadet units from Victoria and Comox. A very close competition ended with a new champion team from 2136 Canadian Scottish Regiment Cadet Corps, who claimed the Vancouver Island Zone Trophy from the past reigning champions, the 2483 PPCLI Cadet Corps. The 2483 PPCLI Cadet Corps Team placed a very close second overall, and the team from 848 Royal Roads Air Cadet Squadron placed a respectable third. It was exciting to see so many enthusiastic youth participating in the orienteering competition and note their increasing skill level.
The cadets took first place finishes in C-1, C-2 and C-3. C-4 enjoyed an exciting competition with Magnus Johansson taking first place, followed by John Downey in second, and Scott Sheldrake in third. Amongst the many participants, we would also like to acknowledge Sam, who celebrated his fifth birthday by participating in C-1 with his many friends. After all, orienteering is a sport intended for all age groups!
Special thanks to Scott Sheldrake for all his extraordinary help in registering and setting up the Sport Ident results and John Downey for jumping in and running registration for the many participants.
