The Newcastle Island Orienteering Weekend was another great success. Competitors benefited from a newly-updated map and beautiful weather. As is tradition, courses and salal-swimming on Day 1 were followed by a multi-generational soccer game (the kids won) and s’mores.

It was great to see new faces and old friends out for the weekend. Ian Saari and the Rhodes and McNeill families came from GVOC while Matt, Chris and Mark arrived by sail-power from Vancouver. Russell and Kean made the trip up from Seattle and a great number of VICO members from Victoria and the Island came over for the weekend.

Congratulations to Dane Low for tackling Course 2 and coming out on top, and to Russell Porter for braving Course 3 two days in a row. Course 4 was the weekend’s most competitive class with 11 runners completing both days. John Downey has two nearly flawless runs to come out on top. He was followed in the standings by Hayden Earle and Erica Lay.

The weekend would not have been possible without the help from many people. Thank you to Dave and Patricia for looking after Registration, John for taking on Starts, Neil and Veronica for helping to get the gear to and from the island and to Claire and Simon for helping with set-up, Finish and control pick-up. Erica was kind enough to vet the courses early in the morning – thanks! And a number of people contributed to pick-up controls — thanks to Brock and Cole, Hayden, John, Neil, Scott and Adrian.

We hope to see you back next year!

Morgan and Richard
