ORIENTEERING SKILLS - BASIC

This session is suited for those who would like to learn how to orienteer and who would like to learn basic skills in order to participate in club events. This 2 hr session will include:

  • An introduction to the sport of orienteering (equipment, rules, course categories etc)
  • How to interpret an orienteering map (colours, symbols, etc)
  • How to orient a map (with and without a compass)
  • How to identify objects in the terrain using an orienteering map
  • Basic navigation and route choice

This session will include several practical exercises to introduce new participants to map reading, navigation and simple route choice. It will include the opportunity to try out a beginner level orienteering event. Participants are encouraged to follow-up their training by attending a Victoria Orienteering Club event to practice their skills. Our next event is a B-Meet Event at the University of Victoria on 20 October. Note: all Victoria Orienteering Club events will provide some quick beginner instructions at the start of each event. Beginners, regardless of experience level, are always welcome at our events. This session is intended to provide you with a more thorough overview and practice session before participating in an organized club event in a fun and engaging skills training session. This session is aimed at adults and mature juniors.
